Synopsis

In the Empire of Khanum, the brilliant and eccentric investigator Ana Dolabra and her assistant Dinios Kol are sent to the remote seaside kingdom of Yarrowdale, an autonomous canton on the verge of being absorbed into the Empire, to investigate the disappearance and apparent murder of a Treasury officer. What looks like an isolated killing unspools into a labyrinthine conspiracy entangling imperial politics, the kingdom's contested annexation, and the illicit trade in leviathan blood and its reality-warping properties, forcing Ana and Din to untangle a web of deception before it consumes them.
