Synopsis

In the empire of Orrun, after twenty-four years of peace, Emperor Bersun the Brusque must give up his throne, and seven exceptional contenders -- each trained in the way of one of the realm's sacred Guardian animals -- compete in a series of trials to succeed him. When one of the contenders is murdered, it falls to Neema Kraa, the emperor's brilliant, idiosyncratic High Scholar, to find the killer before the trials end. But Neema carries a secret of her own: a mysterious, magnificent presence called the Raven has entered her mind, promising that if she lets it in she might win an empire -- or destroy it.
