Synopsis

When the alien Aleriona seize the French colony world New Europe and an appeasement-minded World Federation refuses to fight, former Navy captain Gunnar Heim revives the old law of privateering. Commanding the starship Fox II under a letter of marque, Heim raids Aleriona shipping to force Earth to confront the threat. The novel pits Heim against the Aleriona intellect-master Cynbe ru Taren in a Cold War-flavored struggle between hawks and doves over humanity's place among the stars.
